I mentioned Yoshitoshi in my post a couple days ago, and I wanted to post his “Underwater Fight” because I really like this picture!

I have found a new favorite artist (I admit it, I have quite a few favorites!) whose work I just can’t get enough of. Searching for and studying reproductions of Utagawa Kuniyoshi‘s woodblock prints has become something of an obsession. I especially love his animals and fighting samurai warriors, but the landscapes, crowds of people, mythology, women… hell, all of his work is nice.
His line work is incredible, along with the colors, but what really stands out are the patterns he uses. It’s so easy to get lost in them. He worked for his father as a pattern designer in the textile industry starting at the age of six or seven, so he really knows how to catch the eye and keep it interested.
Kuniyoshi was born in 1797 and is considered among the last of the great Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock printers. He was also a teacher and many other great artists, including Yoshitoshi, emerged from his school.
Maybe there are too many images included in this post… I just want to look at all of his work all the time!

I’m interested in Gnostic ideas, and regularly listen to the podcast Aeon Byte. On a recent show (Schrodinger’s Diary Episode 11) artist Myron Dyal was interviewed, talking about his artwork and how it has been influenced by his epilepsy. Throughout history there have been many artists who are epileptic, Van Gogh probably being the most well known.
While listening to the podcast, I became curious about Myron Dyal’s work. I’m especially impressed with his painted paper-mache sculpture. Enjoy the pictures of his work in this here post. Dyal’s ideas, imagination and history are also very interesting. If you’re wanting to learn more about him, you can check out the video linked below and listen to the podcast mentioned above.
In addition to the posts about art history, exhibits, comic books, artists and local events, I think I am going to start posting my artwork as I finish it a bit more regularly here on ArtDuh. Its not that I don’t post my work here, but I haven’t wanted to feature it here too much I guess. That reluctance has been gradually changing lately, and now it isn’t there anymore.
Here is a picture that I finished last night. It is really a sketch for another idea I have brewing in my mind, but I think it also stands pretty well on its own as a finished piece too.
I finished the picture above just before Christmas, but I’ve held off on posting it anywhere because I have some plans for the piece. But I’ve decided to post it regardless, while those plans come together…
This image shows something I just kept thinking about. For whatever reason, I kept thinking about a guitarist singing flowers and I had to draw it to get it out of my head.

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.

Anna Banarama, director of the Rubber Room School of Dance and Flexibility, is accepting beginning belly dance students. Her introductory class is being offered at 10:45 a.m. at the Salt Lake Arts Hub starting Sunday, January 13. The cost is $7 per class. The length of the class will depend on student progress, but it normally lasts 6 weeks.

About Anna Banarama
Anna has belly danced for 10 years, and taught since 2007. She loves teaching kids, teens, and parent/child pairs, as well as mature adults. Her classes include beginning, intermediate, veil, improvisation, and urban tribal lessons. Anna directs the performing dance company, The Fourteenth Ward of the Rubber Room, a company exclusively for women over age 30, which formed in 2010. Prior to that, she danced with Desert Journey’s Troupe Sekmet and Dragomi, as well as Transfusion Hype’s hip hop and break dance company. She has taken workshops from Rachel Brice, Unmata, Moria Chappell and members of Fat Chance Belly Dance. She excels at costume design, and created a costume for Moria Chappell, who wore it on a Belly Dance Super Star Tour in Paris and Bangkok. Anna is an Urban Tribal Fusion dancer, and she has personalized this style by adding modern, hip hop and performance art. She has her own style of tribal leading, developed in collaboration with her company members, which uses 90′s hip hop music. She is known for her physical flexibility, collaborative personality, discipline and creative use of music and costuming.
