Time To SHOP (local)

Turkey 4 U at SLCitizen

Turkey 4 U at SLCitizen

I know you haven’t finished digesting your turkey yet. But that’s not what matters. What matters is that it is finally, officially time to SHOP! Holiday gifts await you, and we have your shopping local guide, right here.

Our friends at Local First are celebrating Buy Local week tomorrow through December 3. They want you to spend 10 minutes learning about local, share it with 10 people and then spend just a measly 10 percent of your holiday budget locally.

Shopping local makes a difference for the world around us. Support the local shops that make our town cool. Buy from an artist or crafter so they can go buy more supplies and continue making work. But I think the best reason was explained to me by my friend Adam:

This year I’m prepping for my first Christmas as a married man,” says Adam Bramwell, local shopper. “For Mother’s Day, my wife and I visited three local shops one morning and it was super fun, a great experience. The Mother’s Day gift went over huge and so I’m hoping to gain brownie points by buying my wife a unique Christmas gift from a local shop.

Adam’s reason for shopping local: be unique, give something unforgettable and have fun.

And now we are going to make it easy for you. Here is a list of upcoming fun holiday boutiques where you can get your Santa on in a holly jolly local way:BB

Fashion, Fashion CRAFT!

The September Issue

The September Issue

The first week of November is a big week in the old SLC. We’ve got two sexy fashion events, followed by one that will bring your inner crafter deep satisfaction.

Fashion

First up, we’ve got the SL Film Center’s bi-annual fashion film. They are showing the documentary The September Issue. I have wanted to see it since it premiered at Sundance, but unfortunately I will be teaching a class that night. Here’s the details, please go if you can and support our film center:

Wednesday, November 3, 2010
8:00 pm
Club Elevate
155 w 200 s
Downtown SLC

The film revolves around the making of the Vogue September 2007 issue. It depicts the effort that goes into making the magazine, and the passion that Grace Coddington, a former model turned creative director and the only person who dares to stand up to Anna Wintour, has for the highly-regarded fashion magazine. In the film, Coddington is often portrayed as the leading victim to Wintour’s aggressive personality. However, the relationship between Wintour and Coddington reveals itself to be symbiotic as Wintour recognizes Coddington’s expertise and keen eye for design. In the end, Wintour approves most of Coddington’s ideas and they appear in the final version of the September issue.

Halloween Sabbath

September 30, 2010

October Craft Sabbath is coming up on Sunday. Once again we will be at the Main Library right downtown from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.

You will be pleased or perhaps alarmed to find the vendors in goofy, scary and maybe even sexy costumes. Rumor has it that Marilyn Monroe is joining the army of undead that frequents the event. And we may have an uprising of 1980s aerobics instructors who wear very modest clothing.

Fun, quick costumes will be for sale, especially for those who want to be festive at the office, but don’t want to look like a jackass if the big boss shows up for an on-the-spot performance review. Super hero outfits, kitty cat barrettes and even outfits for your squidleigh will be available. Our friend, Amber, who makes nothing but soap will be offering natural fall-scented carpet deodorizer this month and next.

Todd and I have been secretively working on some screen prints for the ghoulish festival, featuring dated images from the mental health system. If you sport one of these shirts or dresses, the ghost of Freud might perch on your boob, while neurons and dendrites creep up your shoulder. And of course, where would our Halloween spirit be if we didn’t include a picture of electroconvulsive shock therapy? We will donate a portion of the proceeds from the day to NAMI Utah, in hope of making the mental health system a little less spooky for everyone.

Crafting, Philanthropy and DIY – All for Kids

August 19, 2010

Today we’ve got Rachel Kade, of Grimmleigh’s Fiends, guest blogging about the an event she is putting together. It’s coming up on Saturday, don’t miss it. Rachel, thank you so much for bringing your awesome voice and perspective to artduh.com for today’s post!

“The Next Gen – Kids Craft Show and Artist’s Reception.”

by Rachel Kade

Jerek Clark's Ganesh

Everybody’s talking about the DYI movement and the Crafting “Revolution”. These aren’t your “Granny’s crafts” either. There’s a lot of talk about how crafting is becoming more popular with the “younger” generation…and by that we usually mean the hip, 20 to early-30-somethings…but what about the EVEN-YOUNGER generation? The Next Generation?!

Local crafter Rachel Kade, decided that these future-artisans might like a venue and a way to learn about crafting & selling their wares. Pair that concept with a 10-year-old daughter that needed to be kept busy this summer and voila! The Next Gen~ Kid’s Craft Show & Artist’s Reception was born!

A “call for artists” went out earlier this summer and over a dozen fantastic kids signed up for what we hope will be a great and educational event. Philanthropy is a huge part of the handmade philosophy so the kids are being asked to donate to a favorite charity as well. Here are profiles of some of the artists, the charities they’ve chosen to donate to, and pictures of what you can expect to see.

Amelia with Sock Creature

First we have Jerek, who is going into the 7th grade and likes math. He’s a very talented illustrator who’s preferred mediums are colored pencils & markers. His favorite artist is Luis Wain, and he will be donating to the Humane Society because he loves animals.

Then we have a brother/sister team: Miles and Amelia are in the 4th and 3rd grade and their favorite subjects are recess & writing. Miles enjoys working with clay and will be featuring his eyeball creations, with names like Macho Eyeball, and Frank Zappa (his favorite artist) Eyeball. Amelia will be featuring her crazy sock monsters and her favorite artist is her Dad, photographer Kevin Lee. Both of these kids will be donating to the Audobon Society’s Gulf of Mexico Recovery Fund.

Miles with Clay Creations

Lora is a 5th grade homeschooler who specializes in polymer clay figurines and has learned a lot from her Aunt Suzanne (local designer Sorry Clementine). Here’s what she has to say about her favorite artist, Van Gogh: “He was a crazy guy, but he was cool. I guess part of the reason he was crazy was because of the paints he used, because the paint back then was toxic”. She’s donating to the Salt Lake County Animal Services “Pit Crew”, where she got her “siblings” Max & Millie.

Onnie is twelve years old and making art is what she LOVES to do!  She sews and crochets clothes for her pet rat and she’s been sewing ever since she was “old enough to hold a needle”.  She also love making stuffed animals, but says it’s “hard to let them go”.  Her grandma and the staff at Youth City have taught her a lot and she is donating to Youth City where she has been going for four years.

Last but not least, Molly is a 5th grader who loves to sew with felt & crochet amigurumi. She prefers using acrylic yarns because of the bright colors and because “some people are allergic to wool”. Her list of favorite artists includes local crafters babyGgear, her mom & dad (of Grimmleighs Fiends), softie artist Love and a Sandwich, comic book artist Doug TenApel and everyone at Charm City Cakes. She makes felt accessories and specializes in animal toys which she donates to local shelters to “help the animals feel happy” She will be donating to the Paws & Claws Benefit for retired lab animals.

When & Where? Saturday, August 21st 6-8:30 p.m. @ Nobrow 315 East 300 South

This event will be free to the public and is being generously hosted by Nobrow Coffee & Tea and sponsored by Craft Sabbath. Light refreshments will be served. For more info please email grimmleighsfiends@yahoo.com

Call for Young Artists -Next Gen Kids Craft Show and Artists Reception

July 19, 2010
Flyer by Molly Kade

Flyer by Molly Kade

Know some young artists, between 2nd and 6th grade, who would like to take their art career to the next level? Our friends Rachel and Leigh Kade are calling for entries for their Kids Craft Show and Artist’s Reception. The event will be Saturday, August 21 from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. at NoBrow Coffee and Tea.

To apply, the young artists must fill out a simple application and write an artist statement. This is intended as a learning exercise so kids know what it’s like to market their crafts professionally. The young participants are also encouraged to make business decisions about pricing, displays and merchandising. The kids are also asked to choose a charity or nonprofit group and donate a portion of their proceeds to a good cause.

Interested artist should send an e-mail to Rachel at grimmleighsfiends@yahoo.com, and she will reply with the application form. This event is brought to you by Grimmleigh’s Fiends, Craft Sabbath and Nobrow Coffee.

Crafting is so Gay! Pride Sabbath Coming up Sunday

June 1, 2010

Pride Craft Sabbath - June 6, 2010

Gay monsters, gay superheros, gay handbags and gay politics, all handmade. What could be better? We hope you will join us for the next Craft Sabbath – Sunday, June 6 from noon to 4 at NoBrow Coffee and Tea. This is the day of the grand Pride Parade, and so everything we are doing is Pride-themed. Todd and I will be there vending and spreading the word about our very gay blog, www.artduh.com. Todd has created a special poster just for Pride. And as for me, I’m getting a little bit political supporting my favorite candidate for governor with rainbow-themed crafts made from his campaign materials (ha ha, I know, nutz). We also are hoping to have some very special handcrafted artduh.com earrings for sale, trade, barter etc.

And now, for a little bit about the artists who will be at Pride Sabbath, what they are making that’s new for the event, and what Pride means to them:

Sandra Seifert -mimi moda
Mimi was my grandmother’s name, the woman who taught me to sew. Memories of us sitting at the table sewing my dollhouse curtains brought me back to her machine. Once my “little sewing hobby” collided with my obsession for handbags there was no turning back and in tribute to that little woman with a huge presence, my handbags were christened.

mimi moda bag

mimi moda bag

mimi moda handbags are all handmade and designed with a bent toward the whimsical. I find inspiration everywhere. From the street to the runway, the muse is omnipresent. Why not let her find a place for expression on your arm?

What Gay Pride Means to Sandra: Growing up in a German immigrant home, I was very aware that our household was different from others. The family’s annual outing to the local Oktoberfest gave us a chance to loudly and jovially express our unique cultural identity and to be surrounded by people like ourselves. Now as a middle-aged gay woman, I embrace Gay Pride with the same desire to be a part of a community and for that community to be celebrated by the larger community that we as Utahns all share.
What I will have for sale on the 6th: Knowing that Craft Sabbath’s June show would be preceding Father’s Day, I decided to focus on more masculine messenger bags. When I realized our show would be coinciding with Pride, I decided to expand my focus from “man bag” to” fag bag,” “hag bag,” and “lesbo luggage.” As I started designing, the bags began to take on a flavor that seemed, in my estimation, to cross the boundaries of gender and sexuality.

Ruthann Hertel -babyGgear
My name is Ruthann Hertel and I am the creator of babyGgear which is everything that I would put my little G-man in (or if I had a little girl, would doll her up in) Everything here rocks! I have everything from screen-printed to hand appliqued onesies. I have the cutest skirted onesies that would make any diva proud! And my sock monsters are the sweetest things ever (I think ) I also am starting a mommies line with some beautiful jewelry.

Cute baby skull caps by Ruthann

What Gay Pride means to Ruthann: I think that it doesn’t matter if you are gay, straight, bi or purple. The main thing is that you are proud to be who you are. Neither the government nor the church should have any say in who you love. Who said that marriage needed to be between a man and a woman? The Bible? Ever heard of separation of church and state? They are worried about the “sanctity” of marriage? What about the fact that any drunk shmoe can go to Vegas and get hitched by a fat Elvis but a two women (or men) who have been in a loving committed relationship for several years can’t even say “I do”? Who’s fool’n who? The “American Dream”? Love who you want, be who you are. Go after it! Work for it! And love it!

What’s new for sale on June 6? I have my newest additions to my sock monster family, my sock stick horses. Also I have lots of new onesies!

Find Ruthann at http://www.babyggear.etsy.com

Carrie de Azevedo-Poulsen – the big brown house
As far back as I can remember, I’ve delighted in making things, un-making things, and re-making things. I seem to be a scavenger by nature, and I have a particular fondness for fabric, particularly using old fabric in new ways, always searching for color and shape combinations that delight my eyes. Most recently, I’ve had a great time experimenting with making felt from used wool sweaters, turning it into jewelry, accessories, bags, and other fun items.

Various Crafts by Carrie Poulsen

Various Crafts by Carrie Poulsen

What Gay Pride means to Carrie: When my family moved to SLC in 1997, we expected to hang on for a year, then decide where we *really* wanted to live. 13 years later, I am still here, delighted to find that Salt Lake is a much more diverse, vibrant and complex community than I had ever imagined. I’m inspired and humbled by the efforts of my fellow Utah citizens who are working to secure legal rights and protections for ALL FAMILIES!

What’s new for Craft Sabbath on June 6th? Maybe it was teaching Utah History to 4th graders last year…maybe it’s that I’m planning on setting up a bee colony in the backyard, but I currently have bees and beehives and all things Deseret (“honeybee,” or so they say) on the brain, and on jewelry, and on bags. I heart Utah.
