Threadless THOR!

“Threadless THOR!” – click for larger view

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I was a dorky kid… not all that much has changed! I lived more in books and my imagination that in this world… I’m pretty sure that hasn’t changed.

I’ve always been a huge comic book fan. When I was about six or so I spent a significant amount of time in the hospital having and recovering from surgery on my eye. I remember my folks bringing me over a nice big stack of comics to help pass the time. Fantastic Four, Hulk, Spider-man, Scrooge McDuck. It wasn’t too long after that when I discovered The Mighty Thor! I loved the character right away.

At about 8 or 9 I even dreamed of being old enough to change my name to Thor one day (I never really liked the name Todd as a kid). The Mighty Thor Powelson! Ha! I outgrew it quickly and realized that sounded pretty dumb, but I sure still liked Thor. And it all worked out anyway. My full name is Arthur Todd Powelson, and I discovered that Arthur actually means “Eagle of Thor”. So I’ve got that going for me, which is nice…

The online tshirt company Threadless has regular design contests, and when I saw their “Design a Thor T!” contest, I knew I wanted to participate. You can see my tshirt design at the top of this post. I hope you enjoy! If you do, I also hope you’ll take a minute and vote for my submission:

Thanks to everybody who came out to the Urban Arts Festival yesterday 🙂

I finished a new piece the day before the festival that I had for sale as a poster. I know the preview image above is a little bit small, but give it a click to see a larger and more detailed view. This is the first piece (or two?) in a larger series that I am very excited about. Stay tuned!

I’ll have a booth at the Urban Arts Festival next Saturday and I’m looking forward to it. Even though I didn’t have a booth at the festival last year, I did attend and had a good time. I like seeing what all of the fine folks at the Utah Arts Alliance put together.

This year will be a little different, with the opening of the Urban Arts Gallery last spring, and also a change in location… we’ll be celebrating this years festival at the Gateway.

I’ve gotten more inspiration from nature than anything else, but nature is everywhere. Even in the city ya cannot escape it. Flowers burst through the concrete cracks, and birds fly overhead, raccoon dumpster-divers.. I do love the city! And I love to be surprised by urban art while wandering through the city.

My artwork is still hanging at the UAA Main Street Gallery (check it out!), but I will still have a number of inexpensive posters, postcards, and drawings. Be sure to come on down. Music, artwork, poetry and dance… can’t beat it!

Jordan Speers

I first saw Jordan Speers’ artwork in some online art publication or another and liked it right off the bat. I heard an interview with him recently, and since then I find myself looking at Speers’ artwork again and again. His artwork has caught my attention. I love the color-schemes he uses, and how everything seems to be made of plastic. It shows this dirty modern world, where even human beings are mass-produced.

Disturbing and beautiful!
